My Playstation 3 killed itself

I'm needing a bit of a break from the intelligent design/Darwin debate, so let's talk about my Playstation 3.

Last night, my Playstation 3 informed me that a new system update was available, and then proceeded to begin downloading the system update... and then locked up (froze) with the download at 12%. Now the system won't boot at all. It will power on but will not boot. The "hold down the power button for 5 seconds" trick does not work. Apparently, the Playstation 3 doesn't have the most robust system update procedure.

I really like the Playstation 3, but this last generation of consoles seem to be the most stability challenged in game console history. XBox 360s have had a horrendous failure rate, and apparently the Playstation 3 has its own issues due to less than robust software/firmware updates. Bummer. Who wants a Blu Ray player that is flirting with death every time it tries to update its firmware?

We'll see how easy this is to resolve. I was able to submit a support request online to Sony, but my 50+ calls to Sony's Support Hotline in the last day have been met with a busy signal. I guess I'm not the only person having problems.

I wonder what Richard Dawkins would say about that.

The ability for consoles and software to update/patch themselves due to the large availability of internet connections is perhaps precisely the reason why things aren't done right at the first attempt.

My PS3 died a few weeks ago and was replaced by Sony, granted not during a software update but one day I arrived home and instead of it folding proteins it was completely off.

You forget to mention the third console in this generation - the Nintendo Wii. If you haven't tried one, I suggest doing so. With popular games like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Mario Kart Wii just to name a few of the 'better' games for it, you'll find plenty of enjoyment with it. Plus with the Virtual Console catalog growing bigger each week or so, it's a great bang-for-the-buck console. On top of that, the Nintendo Wii is by far the most stable of the 3 consoles, and has been from day one of its release.

You need to try to replace the hard disk in the Sony. The update corrupted it. Oh, and don't forget to buy a Wii after getting your Playstation working.

My friend has a playstation 3 and another one of my friends games got stuck in the system. How do you get the disk out? It won't eject the disk no matter what and of coarse, it won't let any other disks come in. How do you lift the cover or even get the disk out? Nothing came up on the playstation website so please give me lots of info.

Hello! I'm just wondering if Blueray disks compatible to be used on all of the Playstation 3 (PS3)? As well can PS2 (Playstation 2) games be compatible with all models of the PS 3/Playstation 3?

Maybe not surprisingly, Linux support has to my knowledge been removed from the 2nd generation PS3 "slim" models.
