I came in late to gentoo..early '02 I think...stuck with it for a few years then bounced around...but I've been back for a while now and never happier!!

Unlike the previous poster, I had nothing but issues with Arch. I tried to stick it out for a few weeks, but it was a pain to get everything working in sync. But I wish them the best of luck.

Seriously after rading this I am so tempted to install funtoo again...

I am using arch now and the packages are generally so much more up to date in that.

But I miss (in a weird way) the emerge process - obviously the control is missing in arch (although with abs/yaourt you can easily compile any package with your CFLAGS in arch). I also miss the time it takes to compile stuff - I found myself doing something useful while it was installing like walking the dog, etc.

For me the final straw was the latest kde4 update - it took about 10 mins to download and install in arch - gentoo was over an hour.

OK, here's my problem with March 31, 2002. :) Yes, it was the 1.0 release, but like much open source software, 1.0 wasn't the first release of Gentoo. 1.0 came approx. two years after Gentoo was "born".

But that doesn't mean we can also celebrate the 1.0 release in March 31, 2012 ;)
